If you can't measure vac above the throttle blades then just take the carb off one more time and check that you only have about 40thou of the idle transfer slot showing. Then adjust your secondary opening to get your idle speed.
That way when you open the throttle from idle it will rev smoothly onto the main jets.
Check your power valve rating with manifold vac and make sure the pump shot is adjusted correctly. It should then rev lovely.
Ballast resistor my backside.

Sounds sweet mate I used to run my old 340 at 18 degrees intial and 35 degrees all in mate never had any pinking and that was about 10.5-1 compression.
By the way they tried mounting the tach like that in the early Sixties on racing cars Paul, the only disadvantage was you needed someone strapped to to bonnet to tell you when to shift. Here a picture of one, this is obviously be the days of playback tachs

Sounds healthy enough, looks ready for the mopars. Hire a trailer, about £30 and you're ready to go. Is there anywhere you can try it out at speed just to check it out ?

Priority's to get it registered Mick. The rules are only gonna get tighter
If i can get that sorted in time and still have dosh to spare, i'll be there
Dave- I took off the carb, the primary transfer slots were completely covered. I adjusted them to look square as you'd suggested (I've no way of measuring them).
But, when i tried it, no amount of tweaking the sec adjuster or idle mix screws would get it to idle
I returned all adjustments to their previous positions and it idled happily again!
Is that a problem? Does it indicate something else wrong?
I've not checked the vac/ power valve yet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The other issue is the clutch- It won't release fully and i ran out of threads. Luckily I have a longer adjuster rod (thanks Dunc) so i'll try that later.
I had to start it in gear to move it. Then switch off, select reverse, start it up, etc!

Nope. If it is happy there just leave it at that.
Most don't have enough idle rpm completely closed. Being a manual trans you don't have to fuss too much as long as it is actually using the idle circuits.
Us auto trans guys had to tune the idle mixture while in gear with the brake on.
