Sorry folks, I forgot to de-brief
GOD I LOVE DRIVING MY CAR!!!!
Ok so I only had even gears, that just gave me an excuse to nail it in 2nd before going for 4th
I've just backed off the rear overthrow bolt a turn, so I'll hopefully have twice as many gears next time out
While it was up in the air again I gave it all a once-over....
Small leak from drain plug
Small leak from reverse detent plug
Speedo drive loose

I guess I could have forgotten something a lot worse.
A good reminder to ALWAYS CHECK YOUR WORK AFTER A SHORT DRIVE!

Just back from a little 10 mile blast
I now have all gears, shifting is smooth and easy.
Temp steady, no hint of overheating.
I'm surprised every time how nice it is to drive- it steers well, stops fine considering the titchy discs and drum rears and cos of the skinny fronts, the steering's not too heavy.
Running nice but AFR gauge reads 16-17 cruising at 3000-ish rpm. It also hesitates when I accelerate at all speeds.
At 85-90 it has a bad shake... prop or wheel out of balance I'm guessing.
All wheels, tyres and the prop are new. I didn't notice the vibration before taking the gearbox out.
Is it possible the rear U.J. hasn't seated right?
I've also not checked the trans-to-diff angle, I wonder if that's wrong and the U.J. is getting a bit crossed-up?

You need to sort the pinion angle before you give it grief - you don't want that coming through your floor....
Sounds like you need more pump shot (one did tell you....

)

Might be pump shot, could also be power valve. Hook up a vacuum gauge and see what you have at cruising speed, you might need a higher no. valve that opens quicker, it can wok wonders for bogs and stumbles.

Looks like you need to jet up if it's that lean while cruising. Too lean while cruising and it will stumble when you step on the pedal.

Well I've not managed to go out again but I've set up my vac gauge so I can see it while driving.
I've also looked up my carb info- mains are .072 primary and .086 sec.
Power valve is currently 2.5 as vac at idle is very low. The only other I've tried is the 6.5 it had originally but that gave a really bad bog coming off idle IIRC.
Pump jet is 31
No I have not bought a DP yet

Disable the secondaries and tune the carb on the primaries first, get your idle mixture and jetting perfect and baseline the carb and then tune for power.
Should see AFR's around 14 at idle and low 13's at cruise.
To right thru your timing again tho Pauly before you start anything.
Use a vac gauge to check idle mixture as well as the AFR gauge, it'll help determine the power valve settings

I`ve always found matching pv`s against vacuum a bit topsy turvy. I would match your PV to your cruise vacuum as thats when it seems to work the best IMO.
My Sattie for example had around 7" vacuum at idle but ran terrible with a 3.5 PV. Put an 8.5 in and it was fine.

This is starting to sound very complicated again

It's not hard, just make small changes = record them all so you can back-track, and work though it methodically.
Ignition timing - idle and full advance first.
Vacuum at idle.
PV to suit - may have to change this as others have stated.
Pump Shot adjustment.
Pump cam change if required.
Test drive.
Check plugs,
Jet as appropriate.
Change PV if needed.
Cup of tea.
Bask in the warmth of success.
Enjoy the car......

Petes on the money perfect, I'm gonna employ him as my life coach I think
This is the most enjoyable bit of 'tinkering' that you can do Paul...... so enjoy it mate

and make full use of yer new AFR gauge......it's an Innovate ain't it? The best in all of Christendom I understand

Ah Pete, you make it sound almost relaxing...
I know, I know, I'm just being impatient, want it perfect NOW.
The driving to fixing ratio is poor so far but I have to get used to that eh?
I'm trying to do too many things at once as usual... I'vm catching up on some housey diy-type stuff I've been putting off for too long. Also I'm fixated on improving my workshop at the moment. I'm fixing up a little lathe I've been given and I'm selling a bunch of crap on ebag to fund a small milling machine and a few other bits n bobs and it's quite late and I've had some very nice cider and I'll stop talking blx now and go to bed cos I'm going to achieve LOADS tomorrow
