Valve stem seals

Posted in workshop, but asking in here for help from the non-workshop-readers! :thumbright:

Bit of a mystery with the valve stem seals. Got two bags of different types, 8 only of each, one larger than the other. What do these normally look like for a 318? What's with the different types? These were gifted, so I don't know where they came from, but they were supposed to be s/b.

Decided last night to use the smaller grooved ones for the exhaust valves and the larger smooth ones for the inlet valves. Seemed a good idea at the time, but now in the cold light of day without coffee, want to be sure...

Please don't tell me that's something else that needs to be ordered...

I am buggered if I can remember now Stu, but I think that the grooved ones go on the intake as they fit over the valve guide to stop oil being sucked in, but as I said I cant remember the last time I used OE type of valve seals.

Well that was the other thing, these don't seem to fit fully over the valve guides. :-k Wasn't sure if they would press over when the springs went on? :?

Guy's right Stu, the ones with the ridges should fit tightly over the intake valve guides and the thick ones go on the exhaust valves. They just float on the valve stem.

Brilliant, cheers Martin. :thumbright:

That's how they went on, but didn't want to force them down without checking. :read2:

Thank's Chaps. 8-)

Have you changed them since your first post Stu, according to that you fitted them the wrong way round?
