I think that's easy to say, but we are car people who frequent various forums & sources of such information, but the average Joe who may change his /her car once every few years probably isn't aware of the tax changes, just saying.

It was in the press,on the telly, well publicised. It's been on all the tax renewal forms and signs in post offices. No excuse.

Fair enough, but to be perfectly honest the only reason that I know is through car related forums, I've never seen it in the press, but then I don't read the papers, I've never seen it mentioned on the telly, hardly watch that & when I've renewed my tax I don't read all the stuff that comes with it, just do it online so never go to a Post office.
Maybe I'm just one of the thickies lol!!

My missus knew and dealt with it all whilst I was working in Norway. She's a smart cookie but she is no way in tune with anything car related so if she knew about it then everyone should.

Agreed, but when does the man on the street get a say in how the country is ran?

Maybe things would change with UKIP in power?

Well I changed my car on 4th October last year and the first I knew about the tax issue was when I got a cheque from DVLA in November for my old car tax.

So I didn't know.

So true, they don't is the answer. Many of the tests my lad does are dicks who have gone to tax and found their mot is out.

I retail 50+ Cars a month from my Garage and so many of my Customers are still unaware of this,I had one Chap last week argue exactly the same point mentioned in the article that if it still had a Tax Disc it was still taxed,I gave up after several attempts to convince him,I mean what would I know I've only been doing it every day since the law changed in October.

The point about MOTs being done only after it's discovered the Tax has expired is a classic situation I see every day too,we call the Customers to remind them, but even then they still forget.

You can just about get away with getting a car home after purchase on the old tax. DVLA don't know about the ownership change until they get the V5C. So long as insurance is valid the ANPR won't know who's driving. It will still log as taxed until DVLA know about the owner change.

One of our young guys was working in town, returned to where he left his car and it was gone. All the kit he needed for work was in the car so the job got knocked. A series of frantic calls to the police, who suggested we ring the pound and it was there. They towed it for no road tax. The car belonged to his Dad who had given him the car as a present a few weeks earlier and didn't realise that the 10 months road tax was not transferred. Cost him a £20 cab ride and over £100 to release it and the car had been damaged loading it onto the low-loader.
