Headlamp Relay Conversion
Moderator: Moderators
Good thread this..ive never done this on my car yet as its always seemed fine
but then i was going to do a HID conversion...
I have all the bits again just not done it yet
Non sealed beam Mini head lights that i can put the H4 hid Hi/Lo lamps into perfect and they dont have the Ugly flat front of the Halogen units
That will drop the load on the switch just by fitting the HIDs, as they just need a trigger from the switch to fire the ballasts and get them working very low draw...massive light output....
did this on my Skyline and wow...very impressive only took half an hour

Yeah, they'd missed a space out on the link (or actually misnamed the file). I went to the directory they keep the files in and looked for it.....so basically not a problem with your equipment!"Steve wrote:Thats the one Gavin!!! Many thanks!! Just wouldnt open on my computer or iphone for some reason..... Cheers!

Thanks Gavin, you are obviously very switched on with computers.... Unlike me!!
Like the sound of using the mini lights as I like the look of the sealed beam units as opposed to the new lamps. Do you have a contact for those Steve of just a google/ ebay search etc?
Cheers Steve

Mini headlamps won’t fit yours Steve, they’re 7”, yours are 5 ¾”. The 7” lamps are normally found on vehicles with only 2 lamps; mkI Escort, Mini, Barracuda, etc, the 5 ¾” lamps are normally found on vehicles with 4 lamps; Capri, Charger, Polara, etc,Steve wrote:Like the sound of using the mini lights as I like the look of the sealed beam units as opposed to the new lamps. I know what you mean about the flatter look of the newer lamps, not an issue for me so much as they’re covered unless they’re on, and I guess if they’re on you don’t want to be looking at them

For you it maybe more of an issue to keep the original look
I’m sure you can get 5 ¾” halogen lamps with a more domed glass to look like an old sealed beam
Just I don’t know where from
I remember Dave posted something, or a make of lamp, sometime ago (could have been a few years ago), I think they might have been Hella 5 ¾” halogen lamps … ??

Mine were Hella. I can't remember what I did exactly. Sorry but the details are in a missing bit of my brain.
But the inner and outers look different in photos. You can also make out the side light bulb in the outers.

I'll try and get a photo later but I ended up with the Autopal lights:

The 103 models are curved so you don't get the 'flat' look and you can pick them up locally.

Si, Dave , Autofetish, Adrian..... many thanks for your advice and links gents....
My headlamps are in 'tubes' for lack of a better description and are set quite deep in so wondering if the newer flat ones would look ok??? At least I know exactly what Im looking for now when I finally decide....Adrianp has given me a link to some new curved ones so will have a good look at them....
Just been putting new halogen bulbs in the kitchen and they are properly flat. Know car ones wont be, look great on Daves car, but just not sure for mine yet....decisions eh!
Cheers Steve
PS...Dave, even Mrs B is drooling over your Challenger and she couldnt give a toss about cars

Thanks Gareth, Blue suggested this but the couple of breakers near me have been less than helpful to be honest. The Autopal ones look spot on though a bit pricey. £90 for the set. Only want to do it once though and as Adrian says, they are curved like the originals so will probably bite the bullet.
Cheers Steve

I tried to get BMW ones but gave up. I had loads of hassle getting hold of a pair. I even tried the dealership but they couldn't do anything without the BMW chassis number to put in the computer.
It was cheaper getting the Hella's anyway. I think I paid something like £25 for the units and bulbs new from a little hella corner shop type place owned by a bloke in a brown overall thay knew exactly what I needed and where on the shelves he would put his hand on them.
Shame he retired and closed up shop. That was my kind of place.
