Love it! Mazda rotary is a fasinating piece of kit. I love the thinking behind it. It's so off the wall. Sounds awesome too...

i must say im not a fan of the noise as such,i am however facinated as you say about the engine itself and the power they produce.

Experts reckon about every 70000 miles or so. Some can go pop with as little as 30k, some can go as far as 100k. The water seals pack up with no warning. Aparently relatively easy to rebuild though, because they have only a couple of moving parts. When I sold my Rx7, the guy over-revved it on the way home and blew the water seals...

Fantastic drive though. Cheapest Ferrari/Porch beater you can buy. Anything that can make a Ferrari/Porch owner embarrassed is cool in my book...

Well I love rotaries... elegant engineering in the extreme.
Not without its downsides, but what has been achieved for the investment is astonishing. Principle advantages are they are very simple (3 moving parts!) and very compact. They produce lots more power than torque and this all makes them pretty much perfect for racing. (I mean racing with corners, not drag).
Unfortunately because of this they tend to get banned. They were banned from the bikes some years ago (norton I think) after they spanked the all classes. They were banned from LeMans (won that) and have slowly been banned from most car classes.

Its a shame. You might not have seen the end of it though. They respond very well to alternative fuels such as hydrogen, so watch this space...

I loved my RX7, but my RX8 was a letdown. The emissions regs have killed it.

In the meantime, heres a rotor in my garage next to a 440. Who says size is everything ?

as much as i like rotory i would take that 440 over the rotor any day looks cooler sounds cooler and packs a punch

In fairness thats a single rotor. Bolt four of them together (a la le-mans) and you have some SERIOUS punch.

Not sure the Charger would sound right with a quad-rotor though.
