that's all the good news, now for the bad. after changing the fuel pump and replacing the dodgy ht leads. i ran the engine for a couple of hrs today. the bad news its breathing heavy from the rocker filler caps and even worst it smokes. really heavy when you rev the engine. I'm gutted it runs sweat great oil pressure, just frigging smokes.

sorry to here motor smoking / blow by !! just a thought looking at your picture , what have you got on the rocker covers looks a sealed cap on one side ?? what about the other ?? PCV to carb on there ?? or
should have an open breather or one piped to air cleaner on one side & & PVC on the other
or open breathers on both sides

two things that were already done when i bought this car was the engine that defiantly is smoking ran it again today half a bottle of reddex on a local business park loads of reving it still smokes. on light driving its fine, just when u boot it.looks like the engine will be coming back out. the second part i left to chance was the rear axle guess what on left had bend only it grates like a milkfloat. 8 3/4 lsd. come on tell me the worst.
Sorry to hear this Nick. Is the smoke out of both exhausts?
Check that the PCV valve isn't stuck (should rattle when you shake it).
It could be the valve stem seals, especially if it smokes when you get back on the gas after deceleration (e.g down a hill). Still means heads off to replace them (or the old rope trick), but easier than engine out.

Any more details that that?Nick Eagle wrote:engine is 383 it has been rebuilt with new rings shells and a mild cam
gearbox has been cleaned up with new filter
Did you do it yourself or at least inspect the work done? (Edit - sorry just read you didn't)
If it is smoking out of both exhausts it is (as already said) probably rings or valve guides. Or too much oil.
Make sure your dip stick is not too short (seen that before) and run the engine with the oil at the MIN mark to see if that helps any.
