There are a lot of pictures of Detroit / Motor-city on the net, it looks so very sad, one can only imagine all of those great car manufacturers rolling out those cars which to the likes of us were / are of great interest. :(

The guardian has a bunch from former USSR today, equally creepy and iconic in their own way.

There was a program on the TV sometime back about Detroit and it was very sad to see how they let a big city go that way. :(

It's what happens to the home economy when you let all the imports in. Much the same here in the industrial areas, except here we knock down the redundant stuff.

I watched that Ali...there was a homeless guy in it who walked into an empty house near the city centre in a deserted neighbourhood and grows food in the garden etc....as Dave says, crazy to see stuff like this in what is supposed to be the most civilised country in the World. Ive always been amazed at the size of the rich/poor divide in the States. I found what I thought was a Ghost Town in the California/ Nevada border a few years back. Went exploring and found people living in corrugated tin shacks with nothing! Couldnt believe it ....especially when it seems anyone who is in real need/ poverty in the UK rarely has to live like that.

it seems the US Government has almost turned its back on Detroit since the car industry collapsed and the mortgage fiddling scandal etc.

They do seem to be very selective on who gets help and who doesn't.

Its not the imports that caused the issues, its the 'Diverse' demographics and unions that destroyed the city.
