I always do that after making up new lines these days, also if you check your filter and clean that out.db wrote:
Guy- I deep-cleaned the carb yesterday. What I should have done is run the pump with the carb feeds into a bucket to flush the pipes through first.
I may well need to clean the carb out again.

HOORAY!!! Success
I flushed the pipes, no more bits found.
TIMING. From the top...
Plugs out, rocker cover off.
Crank turned to 0 degrees.
Both pushrods turn proving tdc on cyl #1.
Carl- Yes I have. Well, I welded up the original

No-one will believe you...
TIMING continued...
Dissy drive lined up with inlet manifold front bolt, driver side.
Dissy dropped in and rotor alignment marked on inlet.
Dissy cap on to confirm rotor aligned with plug lead #1.
This is the point where I dug out my notes and realised that my initial timing should be 22* NOT 12*.
Remembering that the rotor turn 1/2 rotation for each turn of the crank, I advanced the dissy (anti-clockwise) by approx. 11*.
I bolted it all together and it started up and ran sweet as a nut
It's not ticking over very well so some carb cleaning required, but the timing is now bang-on... 22 degrees initial, 50 total (with vac advance connected).

Well... what did you think I'd be doing on paternity leave?
