727 won't shift out of first

Post by Dart Vader »

I have park reverse and neutral

The tci shifter is moving the level underneath ok

But in drive it doesn't want to shift out of first

If I drop the shifter into 1 then move it to 2 it doesn't shift either.

I've looked at the kickdown cable and that seems to be fine and moving the kickdown lever ok.

Have I done something daft?

Do I need to adjust something else?

Check the trans is actually in drive when the shifter says it is. Make sure the kickdown lever is fully forward at rest. If those two things check out you have an issue with the governer assy. or the valve body.

so having spent two days trying all options on linkages etc I've got to this point.

for info it's a TCI streetfighter shifter that's a cable type.

with kickdown connected but not the shifter cable and putting the car in drive just using the gearbox lever it still won't shift out of first when driving it.

then removed kickdown cable and made sure the level was fully forward, the theory being that it will shift 1 2 3 straight away, again seems stuck in 1st.

with all connected, again stuck in 1st, even if I shift it manually, the lever moves but box doesn't shift up

basically I've done all versions of connected, unconnected, manually shift etc

but

when the rear wheels are up off the ground, when in 1st there is a definate, clunk as it drops into first, as I move to 2nd and to drive the wheel speed increases with no extra throttle so I assume it is going into gear. I'm guessing that you don't notice the shift of gears so much when there is no road resitatnce when off the ground.

this leads me to think that although it wants to shift, something somehwere isn't giving enough pressure inside the box to shift it when it's on the ground.

occasionally it sometimes seems to be in drive when it should be in neutral.

I've changed the fluid, even though it was new and done the filter.

is the next step to take the valve body out and check for anything obvious?

the inside of the box is clean by the looks of things and in the sump was just a little dirt, nothing mega metallic.

anyone got any thoughts....Blue?

Right, drop the pan and see if there's loads of debris, a bit is normal loads is game over. Check that when you move the gear selector it moves the shuttle valve in or out, this will be obvious when you're looking at it. Last thing to try, remove the tailshaft, there are the bolts around it and a circlip to spread which is under a cover with 2 Phillips screws under the trans mount. Once you've got that off you're looking to see if the governor is stuck. It's the round thing with the circlip holding it in an ally housing behind the toothed iron wheel. Take all of it out from both sides of the housing and make sure nothing is stuck. Clean it all, lube and reassemble. If the problem still pessists after that, swapping in another valve body that you know is ok is about all you can do without taking out the box and having someone go through it. Unfortunately I'm not in the business anymore so Anton is probably your nearest safe pair of hands.....

if you want Justin you can take the valve body out and bring it to me and I can strip and rebuild it to see if there is anything wrong.
The governor is only accessible when you remove the ali tailshaft housing.

old valve body out

borrowed valve body in

and

IT SHIFTS, well up on axle stands it does.

bummer is that my tci shifter cable has melted against the headers and is knackered.

so tomorrow I will drop it down off the stands, manually put it in drive and see what happens.

half way there it seems, just need to order a new cable

success

Post by Dart Vader »

with the borrowed valve body I now have all three gears on road test.

took apart the original valve body and......

the 1 to 2 shift valve had a rusted and broken spring and the valve had siezed in the bore.

there seemed to be a crusted up area that looks like some moisture has settled and screwed up that section.

new valve body to order then together with the shifter cable
