Whilst I’m in there, I’ve still got a much bigger ‘ole on the other side which I need to sort, where no one fitted a seal.

I’ve got a new filler neck to trunk seal, but bit wary about fitting it as never messed with a fuel tank before.

Been reading a lot of different opinions online and the manual isn’t clear really, quite a few seem to advise forcing the tube into the tank to be able to get the seal over the top of the filler neck away from the body. No idea if I’m supposed to use any kind of sealant or what either.

Anyone got a nice clear pic of how it should all look? And any advice gratefully received. I’d like to have dry clothes at the Nats this year if it Bananarama! it down.

Don’t know what that seal you have there is? There should be a donut seal that fits in the tank and a flat plate that fits to the floor around the filler tube.
I normally support the tank on a jack and lower it down, undo the filler tube from the body and then it’s it’s a case of wrestling the filler tube out of the tank while lowering it gradually. It can be something of a struggle. New donut seal gets fitted to the tank and a l good lubing up with petroleum jelly on the tube hole. Get the filler tube clean where it goes into the tank, slide on the new floor seal and the lube up the end of the filler tube. It’s then a case of raising the tank a bit at a time whilst forcing the tube in. Loosely fit the screws in the tube to the body before bolting up the tank. Fit the floor plate last once everything is in place. It’s easier with another person, one on the tank and the other fighting with the filler tube.

I was going to ask about the one that’s on there, it doesn’t look like any of the detail I’ve seen.

The new one I have is like the one below, which I believe is correct.

Was hoping to get this done during the week, but if it’s a two man job, might have to wait.

I've always done it on my own but an extra pair of hands never hurts. Obviously the less fuel in the tank the better.

Aha! Thanks for the link, Blue. Well, the good news is, I think I have one of those! Found something that looks like that in a pile of parts, but wasn’t sure where it went. Gareth must have ordered that with the intention of doing it at some point.

I’ll measure up later in the week and hope that means I can get it done shortly.

I am on fumes anyway, so guess I’ll just have to give it a go and see how far I get.

Now contemplating moving the battery over at the same time, but not sure it’s worth the hassle.

You need to run a new front to rear cable to do that plus I’d fit a cut out switch as well while you’re at it.

I bet Duncan will have a battery tray and supporting bracket - get the Battery re-located to its proper position on a Road car and it will sort loads of your problems out... very short run to the starter has got to be a bonus...

I might even have a suitable tray, Pete. Have a funny feeling I bought one for the Barracuda years ago and it turned out to be wrong, who knows, I’m due a bit of luck.

I may be able to fab a bracket for the ali tray I’ve bought, thinking about it. Might be a bit bling, though. Could always wrinkle paint it.

That fuel pump has to go, too. Convinced now I don’t need it on a road car.

I would like to take it down the strip this year, will see how I get on.

that's just what i'd do pete, much simpler in it's proper place for sure.

I’d sooner have it up front, to be honest. Never going to be a race car, so would be a damn sight easier.

Think it may be the way, but having a good think on it now.

like a manual shifter boot does ?

Just spent the morning tearing the place apart looking for the donut seal and buggered if I can find it.

After another good look, I reckon I will move the battery back to the front. There’s just no need for me to have it in the back and I can fit another pack of beer in the space I’ll gain.
