So how do they get it to rust and then freeze like that?

cant see the point ,if your going to bare metal it ,you have done most of the hard work ,id paint it ,any sort of rust is a foothold for it ,bare metal and seal it as soon as posible even thumb priints are an excuse for your primer not to stick,i personaly hate all this so called patina look ,says cant be bothered to me

Cant you give it a coat of etch primer, then some high build primer over the top, just to tide you over, untill you can afford to paint it.

I think the paint Jeff suggested is called hood ride paint ?
