Fuel pumps - 440?

I'm doing a build on a 440 using fairly standard mopar tweeks. It's got six pak internals, 906 heads, Holley 3310, an uprated cam (dunno what, but it's got hydraulic lifters), possibly an Edelbrock Torker II inlet, and one of Wil's ignition upgrades. Question is, what fuel pump should I run? I would like to stick with a mechanical pump, but what? If a mechanical pump is not practical, what leccie pump should I go for? Any advice would be welcome... :scratch: :thumbright:

I think the Carter mechanicals are OK. The biggest issue may be the bore of the fuel pipe from the tank...

Carter is the one if you want to keep things fairly stock looking but make sure you get the one with the biggest flow. I think they come in two sizes. Check out Summit Racing for details on pumps.

As pete says they come with only 1/4 inch fittings on them. Holley the same. But you can have them modified to 3/8 NPT as I found out when I did mine. You need to offset drill the inlet though so you need someone with a milling machine.

Long time since i looked pumps up so maybe there is something better out there these days? If there is then Summit will hace it in stock.

Cheap tip for ya, Gringo....

Dave - with the pump I bought off of you some years back I drilled out the 1/4" (or may have been 5/16") fittings and soldered in a short piece of 3/8" fuel line to each fitting, compete with a 'bulbed' end to push the fuel line over (soldered at each end beteen the fitting and the pipe).

Jobs a good 'un. Unless you want to go for 1/2" line for bragging rights (and those on drugs ;) )

That pump puts out nearly 10psi, which I've regulated down to just under 6psi.

However, I do have a choice of two Holley leccy pumps, one courtesy of the late Brisbane Taxi, both courtesy of Kev ;)

What's your feelings on leccie pumps then? I would like to keep it stock(ish) looking, but not at the expense of driveability. :roll:

I you fit an electic pump then you will need a regulator mounted very close to the carb.

If you fit an electric pump, then you are best off runnning dash braided hose the length of the car and do it properly.

You will also need a quality filter twixt tank and pump. The pump must sit below the height of the tank.

"Proper" is inversely proportional to "cheap"....

If I do any more tuning work at a later date, whether it be different heads/carb/cam, what are the limitations with a mechanical pump? I'm assuming once I start chasing big horsepower I'll need a leccie pump, or is a mechanical pump up to the job?

If you plan on spending that much the cost of a replacement pump will be neither here nor there.

Bung a Carter on it and forget it, and worry about the next upgrade later....

A big Carter mechanical will need a regulator as well. They put out more pressure than the carb will like.

I run a 550hp 440 with my Carter mechanical pump. I have always tried to live without the hassle of an electric pump if possible. I certainly would not like to be concussed or unconscious while upside down in a car with one. Although you can fit a tilt switch.
