727 Trans sounds really rough

Post by GranSport »

727 in '69 440 B Body. All looks stock. Runs and shifts okish but Trans sounds like its full of sand, whiring sound. Also bit of a bang/clunk when you floor it. Doesn't seem to slip though.

Trans fluid looks clean and no burnt smell.

Looking for some opinions. I have fitted a valve body shift kit to a previous Mopar but never delved deeper into a 727.

Any diagnosis?
Is it a candidate for a rebuild?
Any local guys to Heathrow who could check it and possibly rebuild it?
What if I bought a rebuild kit and did it myself. Any favourites?

This looked good value....

Many Thanks

Check for loose convertor bolts and make sure the flexplate is not cracked or broken before you get too carried away. Anton is your local transmission guy.

Had exactly the same issue - started sounding like a cement mixer - torque converter bolts on the move in an attempt to escape !

That's the cheap solution.
Hope it's not the sprag like mine was
You would need to abuse the trans to damage the sprag I would have thought, though.

Fingers crossed its the cheap solution. I'll get on it when I get the time. Car seems to be an unmolested survivor. No signs of messing or racing abuse.

Bolts tight. No obvious cracking but maybe best to check it thoroughly. I'll have another go.

Torque convertor painted grey with drain plug and all newish looking if that means anything.
