having just put my new mini starter on, I now need to lengthen the cables to it from the battery.

As all the wires on our cars are AWG, what do you guys use in metric equivalents (for say 4 ,6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 gauge wires)?

Specifically, I am curious about the 6 and 12 gauge wire. I am supposing fatter cable is better for the main positive feed.

decided on part ref; 010603 Flexible 315/0.4, 40mm2, 12.0mm, 300A for the battery cables. Manual says cranking amps 165-180A small block, 180-200A big block. Thought I would go one step bigger than the 010602 Flexible 196/0.4, 25mm2, 9.8mm, 170A as I`m lengthening the cable.

For the solenoid cable, 010104 44/0.30, 3.0mm2, 27.5A - cable OD 3.7mm. Should be more than man enough for the job.

just an update on the outcome.

New FAT cables fitted to starter motor. While I was being all electrical, thought I`d put some headlamp relays in. I reckon I `ve got at least another volt to the lights at idle. Certainly seem a lot brighter and it takes the load away from the headlamp switch :) Also got all the new ignition parts and distributor on as well.

yes, ordered everything through these guys and couldn`t fault the service.

I also put a junction box under the battery tray (less visible) to supply the relays.

Neat job. Simple to fit headlamp relays, much more difficult to keep the wiring nice and tidy.
