It's gone!
Well I know when to turn it in. I've been chasing a mystery clanking noise around the engine since last May and everything I do or change does not make a difference. I know it was not the following;
Bolts to flex plate (tight and correct bolts)
Flex plate not cracked
Fuel pump pushrod
Rockers
Rocker shaft
Lifter's
Pushrod's
Leaking manifold gaskets
The car didn't seem to have much power during the 40 miles it was driven, compression tests were not wonderful, but were evenly spread and as the engine is the only unknown I have decided to send the whole lot over to Dave Billadeau for a total rebuild and dyno. Hopefully Dave will get to the bottom of the problem in due course.

"It's all souped up and everything"
I really feel for you, it must be so frustrating after all that hard work, especially as Summer is just around the corner.
I am sure Dave will sort it out in short order.
Post up the findings so that we can all learn a bit.
All the best, hope it is ready for the Nats.
Pete

It was a strange one, the closest noise I could compare it to was a flex plate issue, it was as loud under the car as it was above, the noise was transmitting through every part of the engine, when you put a stethoscope on each part you could hear the whirring of the part you were listening too but in the background was a clank, clank. It was just a loud at the front as it was at the back of the motor. Sometimes it would go away, but if you pulled slightly on the throttle it came back and stayed, if you put it in drive or reverse it would go until you started to move and then it was clank, clank down the road.
When I got the car, the motor seemed fine, pulled ok, no smoke and no undue noises. Pulled it out of the car and sat it in the corner of the garage, covered up. Put it back in, some 2yrs later (supposed to have been 8 weeks), and straight away something was wrong, loads of very helpful suggestions, all explored but it got to the point where I was just throwing money into an orange coloured hole chasing a phantom noise from an engine of unknown condition. Hence it's off to be sorted and tested, I wish I had the cash to do what Dave wanted to do with it, but the 'long suffering' Wife wants a Holiday as well, so no TTI headers or exhaust...

I'm ok on that score, all belts were disconnected one by one, still made the noise, so not alternator, water pump or PAS pump. I even pulled the dipstick tube in case it was that! Windage tray is another suspect and Mick might be on the money, I didn't check that.
Hopefully Dave will strip it down and it will reveal itself....

It's all back together, Dave has done a grand job and thinks I might notice the difference! Quite a few upgrades internally and new ignition should see a vast improvement, just got to collect it and drop it in, hopefully back in action next weekend........
