Bolt on EFI

Post by Gareth »

This looks interesting. Simply bolts in place of a four barrel carb. Too good to be true :-k

Nah, there's been various throttle body injection systems for V8s, its generally easier/cheaper (even in the long term) to just use a carb. Tuned port injection is the good one to have, more efficient and with performance potential etc, but that needs a different intake (a la Charger in 'Blade').

Yeah, I would generally steer clear of TBI units............however there are a few things of interest on this unit. They claim that it is not like typical TBI and the injectors are actually in the dummy 'float bowls'. Personally I don't see how that would make a lot of difference, you are still injecting into the intake and not the cylinder, so you could still have fuel distribution and drop out issues just like a carb or 'conventional' TBI.

The interesting bit is the self learning via use of a UEGO (aka a wideband sensor). In concept this is definitely a good route to go, though of course depends on the quality of the algorithms they've used. This may also imply the use of a closed loop system, which would be another development more like modern systems. I'm not up on the current aftermarket EFI setups but I'm not aware of any that self learn or run closed loop (maybe there are some?).

It's also got a returnless fuel system, again something that modern vehicles use, regulating pump speed to fuel demand and negating the need for a return line.

I also quite like the way they've designed it to be a real simple bolt-on (I note they don't mention the need to fit an oxygen sensor to your exhaust, mind, but really that is not too hard).

So, looks like quite a well thought out system, but ultimately it is still a TBI which would probably be enough to put me off, depending of course on price (not low I'm assuming) and how well it works in real life.
Interesting though.
