Looks like I'm in the poop then!
My original tyres can't be balanced so they can't be driven over 60-70.
Now I've blown £300 on a pair of tyres I can't use on the road at all.
After all that bloody money and effort, It's looking like I might end up a trailer queen this year

Did the Tyre company not comment or advise you when they were fitting them, or did you imply to them they were for track only and NOT for road use?

I would have a "chat" with them - they should KNOW the regulations.

For all I know WE may all be wrong on here............

Balance your old tyres like you would do a motorcycle back in the day.

Buy wheelweights from your new mates at ATS.

Build an axle and stand so you can spin the wheel and trye.
Spin tyre. Mark lowest point when it comes to rest.
Keep doing it. Build up a pattern of the lowest point.

Add weight to the opposite side. Repeat. Repeat, Repeat ( you know where this is going).....

The 33 x 15 slicks on the Barracuda needed 300g on one wheel and 30g on the other, so you could be in for a long night.

I'd take some beers into the garage if I were you.

Penalties

The penalties for offences related to the use of faulty tyres on vehicles are very severe. In the case of any vehicle, except goods vehicles and vehicles adapted to carry more than eight passengers, for every offence there is a fine at level 4 of the standard scale with discretionary disqualification and compulsory driving licence endorsement with 3 penalty points. Level 4 is currently £2500 and each faulty tyre is considered as a separate offence. Two faulty tyres equals £5000.
OFFENCES CAN RELATE TO:

Tread depth: a tyre worn below the legal minimum.
Mixing: an incorrect mixture of radial and cross ply tyres. Inflation: a tyre not inflated to make it suitable for the purpose to which the motor vehicle or trailer is being put.
Cuts: certain long and deep cuts as specified in regulations. Lumps, bulges or tears: caused by separation or partial failure of the tyre structure. Exposed ply or cord
Unsuitability: regarding the use to which the motor vehicle or trailer is being put or to the types of tyres fitted to its other wheels.

sell some tosh you have lying round and buy another set of wheels n tires for the street, them big orrible mickey t,s want binnin by the sound of it

That's how I paid for the last lot!

I'll make some enquiries about the legality of the new ones at my friendly local MOT station this afternoon.
If they're a no-go, I'll take the old ones back to ATS and get them refitted without the tubes. See if that helps the balancing.
They did say while I was there that the wobble in the sidewalls is a common thing with radials, it's only because these are so big that it's a problem.
So at least i know:
A. I didn't do it.
B. They're safe and won't fall apart anytime soon.

As you probably know, the old wide tyres are bound to be crossplys.

With these kind of tyres the sidewalls are SO thin they will leach air out of them. When we put the QT's in a BIG bucket of water it looked like froth coming off the sidewalls. For road use you may need tubes......or be prepared to pump them up on a regular (more than daily?) basis without tubes........

Sound like you have what they call a radial fracture in your tyre.

The tubes will not make a big difference to the balance, but moving the tyre on the rim can. get the tyre run up on a balancer and see how far out it is. Mark the heavy spot on the tyre also mark the rim now deflate tyre and turn the tyre (becareful of the tube) on the rim until both marks are opposite each other re-inflate and recheck balance it should have reduced the amount out of balance. If the heavy spot is now between the two marks make a new mark on the rim and move the tyre about an 1/8 of a turn towards the new mark you should keep reducing the weight this way.

So if you are still on talking terms with the lads at ATS give it a go, its a long old process but can pay dividends. This used this technique to balance the wheels on Ralliart's Lancers and on the Audi Quattro s1 group B cars as the weights used to fly off them.

Yup those tires are not for UK use, can use em here in N. America on the street, but as said, don't work in the wet.

I remember the fun when I had to replace my QT's. Kwik Fit were crap, they told me they would only fit if I purchased tires from them. So I asked them to quote me for a pair. Of course, they could not. So I took em to Stapletons. They done the job for me.

Never used tubes, 1 tire would loose a little pressure over a few months, They were OK in the wet, well as good as can be expected with silly size tires!

I don't mind putting air in them Pete, I check or change the pressures a bit every time I go out anyway, and the car lives right next to the compressor

My Truk has I think 6 ply sidewalls AND tubes and I have to pump 2 or 3 of them up every other week!
And that involves rolling 80 feet of airline out to the road
